As we enter this second wave, it seems like a good time to remind everyone of some simple things you can do to maintain your wellbeing. Let’s call them the “The 3 Rs” of pandemic wellness.
Rest, Routine, Recognize
Rest seems pretty straightforward, right? Getting enough sleep is a no-brainer. But what about rest that doesn’t involve sleeping? It’s important to recognize that getting rest can also mean other things than just nighttime sleep. Rest can mean a nap in the afternoon. Rest can mean a downtime activity away from your work responsibilities or caring for family. Rest can mean taking a break from social media. Rest also means letting yourself off the hook from feelings of guilt about not working or being “on” all the time.
Routine is key. In this time where we feel like there is so much uncertainty, creating and maintaining a routine is the one thing that we can do regain a sense of control and cultivate a feeling of accomplishment. You don’t have to schedule yourself down to the minute (unless that works for you!). It can be as simple as doing one thing consistently every day. For some, it’s getting to your desk at the same time everyday or taking breaks at set times. For others, it’s getting dressed in a “work” outfit everyday. Or setting aside time daily to engage in a stress-relieving activity (ie. exercise or a creative endeavour). If you need help at first, use a timer or alarm to help you build your routine. Start small (ie. 10 minutes) and work your way up.
Recognize that what you – and others – are going through is difficult. We are a generation that is grappling with this for the first time. We’re fumbling along together in the best way we know how. Give yourself a break from time to time. Recognize that you will not feel your best every single day and that’s okay. You are not alone in feeling this way. Even during these difficult times, every new day is a clean slate to give yourself the opportunity to start again.
